Bob Geldof: £1m raised 4 minutes after Ebola appeal on X Factor

The current outbreak of the deadly virus was first reported in March and has killed more than 5,000 people, almost all in West Africa.

Bob Geldof tells how nervous he was about appearing on the X Factor to publicise Band Aid 30 and said the response had been "extraordinary".

The song has been re-released to raise money for victims of Ebola: "Four minutes after X Factor we had £1m in donations".

Reflecting on the original 'Do They Know It's Christmas?' from 1984: "Each time we go to bat with this song, massive things occur...Midge and I sat down one morning and knocked off this OK little song".

A video for the song, re-recorded to raise money to tackle the crisis in West Africa, was shown on ITV's The X Factor on Sunday.

One Direction and Ed Sheeran are among the performers on Do They Know It's Christmas? to tackle Ebola.
The track is now available to download at a cost of 99p. A CD version, costing £4, will be released in three weeks.
