Manchester United have confirmed that summer signing Marcos
Rojo has finally been granted the visa that he has been waiting for and will
now be able to make his debut for the club against Queens Park Rangers at Old
Trafford next Sunday.
Issuing a statement via their official website the Old Trafford club revealed that the UK Border Agency had taken the decision to grant the visa. By virtue of having played in more than 75% of Argentina's international games over the last 2 years, Rojo had already automatically obtained a separate work permit, but needed his visa to validate it.
The news was initially broken earlier in the day by
Argentina based Fox Sports journalist Christian Martin, who tweeted,
"Marcos Rojo has finalised his paperwork and travelled to Lisbon to
collect his work permit. He'll be in Manchester later today."
The 24-year-old defender joined United from Sporting Lisbon
more than two weeks ago but was unable to make his debut in games against
Sunderland, MK Dons or Burnley because he lacked the right documentation to
allow him to work in the UK.
Many reasons for the delay in acquiring his work permit were
put forward, from complications relating to prior third party ownership, to the
more accepted suggestion of pending criminal charges for an alleged assault
that took place in Argentina in 2010.
Now that he is eligible to play, Rojo, who played in
Argentina's 4-2 win over Germany alongside United team-mate Angel Di Maria on
Tuesday night, is expected to slot straight into Louis van Gaal's back line,
which has been hit by an early season injury crisis.
