Briton found with throat cut in Bali

A Briton has been found dead with his hands tied and throat cut on the Indonesian island of Bali, the British embassy in Jakarta has said.

The man, who has been identified as Robert Kelvin Ellis, 60, was found in a ditch near a paddy field between the tourist areas of Ubud and Kuta.

Police in Bali say Mr Ellis had been living on the island for some time.

A spokesman at the British embassy in Jakarta said: "We were notified of the death of a British national in Bali."

"We stand ready to provide consular assistance," the spokesman added.

Police said Mr Ellis had been living in the Sanur area of Bali, on the south coast of the island, and that his Indonesian wife had reported him missing.

Detective Wisnu Wardanahe said the body had been covered with plastic and bed quilts.

Ida Bagus Putu Alit, head of forensics at Bali's Sanglah Hospital, told the AFP press agency the man suffered "three gashes on the neck" that were caused by a "sharp weapon".
