The 27-year-old, first choice for Orlando Pirates and an established international, was tragically killed in Vosloorus on Sunday evening, with details yet to be confirmed
Orlando Pirates captain and South Africa international Senzo Meyiwa was shot and killed on Sunday in Vosloorus.
The exact details of the incident have not yet been fully confirmed but the South African Police Service (SAPS) has provided confirmation of the goalkeeper's tragic death.
Meyiwa captained Bafana during their 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Congo, Nigeria and Sudan this season, taking over the skipper's armband in the absence of Kaizer Chiefs' Itumeleng Khune.
The 27-year-old Bucs stalwart was pronounced dead upon arriving at a hospital in Gauteng's East Rand.
The talented goalkeeper played his final match for the Soweto giants on Saturday, helping his side to reach the semi-finals of the Telkom Knockout tournament with a 4-1 victory over Ajax Cape Town at the Orlando Stadium.
Meyiwa's contribution to the national team has been immense in the Afcon qualifiers, with Bafana yet to concede a goal after four games while topping their table ahead of Sudan, defending champions Nigeria and Congo.
Pirates chairman Dr Irvin Khoza wrote on Twitter: "This is a sad loss to Senzo's family, especially his children, to Orlando Pirates & the nation." The club have announced that they will hold a press conference on Monday morning.
