Charing Cross Station Evacuated After Fire

Policeman said the busy station was evacuated after the fire, which they believe was caused by an electrical fault.

The fire broke out just before 11am, with witnesses describing smoke and flames coming from one of the trains at the station.

Around 100 people were told to leave the station.

Annika Anwary, who works in the station, described "quite a lot of flames and flashing lights".

She said: "I heard the alarm so I came upstairs and I saw the train was burning

"People were just all running out of there.

"They tried to stay calm but there were definitely people running."

London Fire Brigade said later that there was a small fire in the front carriage of a train on platform six.

A spokesman said "about 5% of the carriage" had been alight.

The fire was quickly under control and the station is expected to re-open shortly.

The station is now open, apart from platforms five and six.

London Ambulance Service checked two people at the scene but a spokesman said nobody was taken to hospital.

A British Transport Police (BTP) spokesman said: "At this stage, the fire is believed to have been the result of an electrical fault and there are no suspicious circumstances.

National Rail said disruption was likely to continue until at least 1.30pm
