Snow and sleet have been falling in parts of the UK as forecasters warn the weather could cause disruption.
Flights into Liverpool Airport are being diverted to Manchester Airport while snow is cleared off the runway.
An "area of rain, sleet and snow" is moving east across Northern Ireland, Wales, central and northern England and Scotland, forecasters said.
Heavy rain is falling in some parts, causing standing water and spray on the roads.
Forecasters warned of "treacherous" driving conditions.
The Met Office said there is a risk 10-15 cm of snow could fall on Friday evening in parts of Wales and the Midlands, even at low levels.
Other areas could see snow accumulations of 2-4 cm.
"The biggest risk of settling snow [is in] north Wales, the north Midlands and Lincolnshire," said BBC forecaster Aisling Creevey.
"Elsewhere we're likely to see a wintry mix of rain, sleet and snow but we're not expecting it to settle in those areas."
Yellow warnings - meaning "be aware" - of snow and ice have been issued for all of the affected areas, with the Met Office saying there is "potential for disruption", especially for people travelling.
Forecasters also warned there was potential for a higher, amber warning - indicating people should be prepared - in Wales and the Midlands.
However, the Met Office said "some uncertainty surrounds how much snow will occur".
A cold weather alert for parts of England has also been issued, with the Met Office warning of a 90% chance that severe weather between 15:00 GMT on Friday and 12:00 GMT on Wednesday could "increase the health risks to vulnerable patients and disrupt the delivery of services".
The amber - level three - alert is one below a national emergency and indicates social and healthcare services should target "high-risk" groups, such as the very young or old, or those with chronic diseases.
Public Health England also urged people to look out for vulnerable friends and family and neighbours. during the cold snap.
The Met Office said: "A depression will track south-eastwards across England and Wales during Boxing Day, clearing south-east England overnight.
"A spell of snow is likely, even to lower levels, on the northern flank of this depression. South of the depression centre, rain will fall, heavy at times."
The weather warning applies from 11:00 GMT on Friday until 06:00 GMT on Saturday. In Scotland, the snow and ice warning applies from 22:00 on Friday until 12:00 on Saturday.
