Balmy Britain Set For Temperature Record

It may be less than four weeks until Christmas but shoppers have been enjoying some pleasantly warm weather across parts of the country, with a rather balmy start to the weekend.

It was warm and sunny across southern England, the Midlands and East Anglia.

The average high for late November is around 9 or 10C (50F) but top temperatures were reaching 15 or 16C (61F) across Cornwall and Devon, with a maximum of 13C in southeast England.

Mild weather has been the theme this month with the provisional statistics for November, from the 1st to the 25th, indicating it is the fourth warmest on record, says the Met Office.

This has been a warm year for the UK - remember that each month, with the exception only of August, has recorded temperatures of at least 1C higher than average.

Of note is the Central England Temperature series, a series of daily and monthly temperatures which dates back to 1659 and covers a roughly triangular area of the United Kingdom enclosed by Lancashire, London and Bristol.

It looks as though 2014 could turn out to be the warmest year on record in the CET series, even if December comes out as average in terms of temperature.
