Child Sex Abusers Who 'Shared' Girls Jailed

Thirteen Somali men convicted of running sex ring
Seven men have been jailed for more than 40 years in total for their involvement in a child sex ring in Bristol.

The men, who are of Somali origin, were part of an inner city sex ring involved in the abuse, rape and prostitution of teenage girls.

Mohamed Jumale, 24, Mohamed Dahir, 22, Said Zakaria, 22, Jusef Abdirizak, 20, Omar Jumale, 20, Abdirashid Abdulahi, 21, and Sakariya Sheikh, 21, were sentenced at Bristol Crown Court by Judge Julian Lambert.

Pronouncing sentence, the judge said: "You have all brought deep shame on your families, along with all the damage you have done."

"You were all brought up to know what proper standards of behaviour are.

"As well as deep, deep concerns for the victims of your crimes, I also have some concern for your families, who are not responsible for your actions. You are."

During the trial, the court had heard how the abused girls, aged between 13 and 17, were groomed by the men and "shared" among the men's friends for money.

The girls, who believed they were the individual girlfriend of a particular man, were told that sharing girlfriends was part of the men's "culture and tradition".

One 13-year-old girl described how she was raped four times by three different men, having been trafficked across Bristol by Said Zakaria.

"You behaved without humanity and simply took what you wanted, leaving your victim totally humiliated and bleeding," the judge told him.

Mohamed Jumale forced another victim to be raped by his younger brother, Omar Jumale, to try to save him from going to hell as he "wanted to turn gay".

The judge addressed Mohamed Jumale during sentencing, saying: "You persuaded your girlfriend to have sex with three different men, including your brother.

"What you did was akin to causing a form of prostitution. To say you took advantage would be a significant understatement. You preyed on her affection for you in a highly cynical way."

The two-year abuse of the teenagers came to light during an Avon and Somerset Police investigation into the men.

A total of 14 men were convicted of a number of serious charges in connection with the case.

Eight had already been jailed for between 18 months and 13 years following an earlier trial at Bristol Crown Court.
