Sheffield Utd Stopped Ched Evans From Training With Them

Convicted rapist Ched Evans will no longer be allowed to train at Sheffield United's facilities after widespread public anger.

The Wales international began training with the club after being released two-and-a-half years into a five-year sentence for raping a 19-year-old woman in a hotel room in Rhyl.

In a statement, Sheffield United said it "has decided to retract the opportunity for its former player, Ched Evans, to use the club's facilities for training purposes, as was previously intended".

Evans has continued to protest his innocence since his release and in a video statement said he hoped to be allowed to return to professional football.
Club patrons Paul Heaton, Dave Berry, Lindsay Graham and Charlie Webster quit their roles after Evans returned and sponsors said they might "re-evaluate" their relationship with the League One side.

Olympic gold medallist Jessica Ennis-Hill demanded that her name be removed from one of the stands at the club's Bramall Lane ground if Evans was re-signed.

Deputy Prime Minister and Sheffield Hallam MP Nick Clegg tweeted: "A sensible decision by Sheffield United regarding Ched Evans. Step in the right direction."
