A mum killed her 20-month-old toddler in the toilet of a burger bar in New York and blamed the devil, police said.
Mum-of-two Latisha Fisher, 35, is accused of suffocating her son Gavriel Ortiz-Fisher in the bathroom of a fast food restaurant in Midtown New York.
She also stopped staff from breaking in to save him, officers claimed.
Police also said Ms Fisher, who also has a 12-year-old son, later "blamed the devil" for the killing.
Ms Fisher locked herself in the bathroom of the restaurant at around 2.25pm yesterday, with customers and employees becoming concerned when the toilet queue began to grow long, witnesses said.
A woman apparently walked into the toilet to find Ms Fisher holding her hand over her son's mouth, telling the witness: "I put (hand) my over his mouth to put him to sleep."
Workers then broke into the cubicle, where they found the toddler unconscious and foaming at the mouth, the New York Daily News reports.
Ms Fisher then tried to swat away restaurant staff as they desperately tried to perform life-saving CPR on the limp toddler, police claimed.
A law enforcement official described Ms Fisher as "soulless".
“She put her hand over his mouth and smothered him,” the official said.
Little Gavriel was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he later died.
Ms Fisher was arrested at the restaurant and is awaiting charges.
Gavriel's maternal grandma, Merial Fisher, 54, said: “It’s hard, it’s really unbelievable. I know my daughter loves her son.
“I don’t know what happened. It’s just so sad. He was such a happy baby.”
Paternal grandma Miriam Lozada said the "family is in mourning".
“I’m going to miss my sweetheart, miss my boy, I’m going to miss him so much,” she said.
Fisher’s Facebook page, where she goes by the name Lola Honey, is filled with photos of her baby Gavriel and other members of the family.
Just four days ago she posted: “How did everything change on me. I went to sleep feeling well."
One neighbour said: “He was a beautiful baby. He was very happy."
